Lundahl LL1689-18 Line Output Transformer for Tube Amplifiers 18 mA
The Lundahl LL1689-18 is designed as a line output transformer for tube amplifier circuits. As part of the LL1689 series, it uses primaries wound with a special low-capacitance technique to support strong high-frequency performance in demanding audio components and line-level output stages.
This 18 mA single-ended version uses a core air gap chosen so that 18 mA DC current generates a no-signal core flux density of 0.9 Tesla when all primaries are connected in series. This leaves a flux density swing of 0.7 Tesla for the signal, making it suitable for carefully implemented single-ended amplifiers.
The transformer supports single-ended line output connection alternatives of 18:4, 18:2, and 18:1. Primary inductance is 90 H for the LL1689-18 configurations, with maximum output voltage at 30 Hz of 56 V r.m.s. for 18:4, 28 V r.m.s. for 18:2, and 14 V r.m.s. for 18:1.
Practical construction details include a 0.75 kg transformer weight, 4 x M3 mounting holes, and 4 kV isolation between primary and secondary windings, with 2 kV isolation between windings and core. The source impedance values of 3 kΩ to 3.5 kΩ are recommended upper limits unless frequency response compromises are acceptable, and resonance peaking at lower source impedance can be reduced with secondary load resistors.
